Bookkeeper vs CPA
in Texas

They are two different jobs, and the question is rarely which one to hire. A bookkeeper keeps the records accurate as the year happens. A CPA advises on and files against those records. Most growing businesses end up with both.

The short version

Who does what

A bookkeeper

Records and reconciles transactions, categorises them, closes each month, and produces financial statements. The work is continuous and its output is a set of records that can be relied on.

A CPA

A licensed professional who prepares and files tax returns, advises on tax position and entity structure, can represent you before tax authorities, and performs attest work such as audits and reviews.

The distinction that matters in practice: the CPA’s work depends on the bookkeeper’s. A tax return is only as good as the records behind it, and a CPA asked to file from an unreconciled year will either spend billable hours reconstructing it or file against numbers nobody has verified.

Through the year

How the two roles
actually interleave

  1. 01

    Every month — the bookkeeper

Transactions recorded and categorised, accounts reconciled, the month closed, and statements produced. Nothing waits for year end.

  2. 02

    Through the year — both

When a question comes up with a tax dimension — a large purchase, a new hire, a structure change — the bookkeeper supplies the numbers and the CPA advises on the treatment.

  3. 03

At filing time — the CPA

Given clean, reconciled books, filing becomes a handoff. The CPA works from records rather than rebuilding them, which is both faster and cheaper.

Common misconceptions

“My CPA does my bookkeeping.” Some firms offer it, often at a higher rate than a dedicated bookkeeper, and usually in a year-end batch rather than a monthly close. Worth checking what you are actually receiving.

“I only need someone at tax time.” This is the most expensive version. Reconstructing twelve months in March costs more than maintaining them, and it means you spent the year making decisions without usable numbers.

“A bookkeeper can give me tax advice.”No. Bluebonnet does not provide tax advice, prepare returns, or represent clients before tax authorities. Those are the CPA’s work, and we work alongside yours rather than in place of them.
