How much does a
bookkeeper cost in Texas?

Honestly: it depends, and anyone quoting a firm number before looking at your books is guessing. What is useful is knowing which five factors move the price, so you can compare quotes on the same terms.

Why nobody can
quote you blind

Bookkeeping is priced on work, and the work varies enormously between two businesses with identical revenue. A consultancy invoicing four clients a month and a retail business with daily card settlements, three merchant processors, and a payroll of twelve are not the same job even if both turn over the same amount.

That is why Bluebonnet confirms pricing after the free consultation and before any work begins. It is also why a quote that arrives before anyone has looked at your file should make you cautious — it will be revised later, and the revision is rarely downward.

The five factors

What actually moves
the price

  1. 01

    Transaction volume

The single biggest factor. A business with 60 transactions a month and one with 900 are different jobs, whatever else they have in common.

  2. 02

    Number of accounts

Every bank account, credit card, loan, and merchant processor is another thing to reconcile every month.

  3. 03

    Payroll

Whether payroll exists, how many people are on it, and how often it runs — each cycle has to land in the ledger correctly.

  4. 04

    Clean-up backlog

Books that are behind are priced separately from ongoing work, because rebuilding a year is a project, not a monthly rhythm.

  5. 05

    Reporting depth

A monthly profit-and-loss is one thing. Class or job-level reporting, receivables ageing, and cash-flow context are more.

Comparing quotes
fairly

When you have two or three quotes, the numbers are rarely comparable straight out of the box. Before you compare them, establish for each:

Is clean-up included or separate? A low monthly figure that assumes your books are already current is not a like-for-like offer if they are eighteen months behind.

What is the close cadence?Monthly, quarterly, and “we tidy it at year end” are three very different services often described with the same word.

Who answers your questions, and how fast? A ticket queue and a named bookkeeper are different products. This is where the cheapest quote usually turns out to cost the most.

Does it include payroll or payables? These are frequently excluded from the headline price. Ask explicitly — see payroll and payables for how the scope gets drawn.

How Bluebonnet
handles it

Every engagement starts with a free 30-minute consultation. We look at the business, the current state of the books, and what you actually need — then the price is confirmed before work begins. You will always know the number in advance.

If the books are behind, clean-up is scoped and priced separately from the monthly close, so you can see what is a one-off project and what is the ongoing commitment.
