No judgement,
and no estimate before we look

Books fall behind for ordinary reasons. The business got busy, a bookkeeper left, a system migration went sideways, or the year simply got away from everyone. It is a common situation and it is a solvable one.

What we will not do is quote before looking. The honest answer to “how much does a clean-up cost?” depends entirely on how many months, how many accounts, how much of the source documentation survives, and what state the chart of accounts is in. Those get established at the consultation, and the price is confirmed before any work starts.

You probably need this if

Four signs the books
need a reset

You have stopped opening the reports

Not because you do not care — because you already know they are wrong, so reading them tells you nothing.

The bank balance and the books disagree

And nobody can say by how much, or since when. This is the clearest signal that reconciliation has lapsed.

Your CPA asked for something you cannot produce

Filing season turns into a reconstruction project, usually at the worst possible moment.

Uncategorised transactions have piled up

The bank feed kept importing while nobody was coding it, so the ledger is full but meaningless.

The process

How the reset
actually runs

  1. 01

    Review what exists

Bank and card statements, the accounting file, invoices, receipts, payroll records — whatever is there. The first job is establishing the real scope rather than assuming it.

  2. 02

    Rebuild what is missing

Historical transactions reconstructed and categorised from source documents, with a clear record of anything that could not be substantiated.

  3. 03

    Reconcile every account

Bank, credit card, and loan accounts matched period by period until the books and the statements agree.

  4. 04

Clean up the chart of accounts

Duplicate, unused, and meaningless categories consolidated, so the structure you carry forward actually reports something useful.

  5. 05

    Hand off, tax-ready

Current books, readable statements, and organised records your CPA can work from — plus a written note of what was reconstructed and what was missing.

  6. 06

    Move onto a monthly rhythm

Most clients move straight from clean-up into monthly bookkeeping, which is what stops the backlog rebuilding.

What you end
up with

  • Reconciled bank, card, and loan accounts
  • A chart of accounts that reports something meaningful
  • Financial statements for the recovered periods
  • Organised records your CPA can file from
  • A written summary of what was rebuilt and what could not be
  • A clear route onto a monthly close
